Thompson B. Wheelock was appointed a Cadet at the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1818, and graduated 10th in the Class of 1822 as a Second Lieutenant in the 4th Artillery Brigade. He served in various garrisons along the East coast until 1829, when he resigned: from 1830 to 1833 he was President of Woodward College in Cincinnati, but joined the Army again, this time in the 1st Dragoons, fighting Indians on the western frontier then in the Second Seminole War, where he died at age 35 (making the year of his birth probably 1800 or 1801).
