Mrs. Susan Hanson, Pioneer Chester Matron, Passes Suddenly
Mrs. Susan May Hanson, pioneer and highly respected matron of Chester and Liberty county since 1919, died suddenly at her home in Chester about 7 o'clock Wednesday morning, February 18th, from a heart attack.
Mrs. Hanson had been in her usual health up until the time she was stricken early Wednesday morning. She had gotten out of bed at her usual rising time shortly before seven o'clock and started a fire in the kitchen stove, and then gone back to bed. She called to one of the girls that were boarding with her, and asked for a drink, and then got up again and went to the kitchen, where she fell on the floor and expired before assistance could be called. Dr. Benke was called at once, but Mrs. Hanson had died before he arrived.
Deceased had made her home in Liberty county since 1919, when she arrived with her family from Alberta, the family settling on a ranch near Whitlash. The husband passed on in 1929, when she moved to Chester, and had resided here continuously since that time.
Mrs. Hanson was a loveable character, and had a wide circle of friends throughout the community. She had maintained her own home in Chester and was active in religious and social circles. News of her passing was received with deepest sorrow by her many friends and relatives.
Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Hanson were married in Alexandria, Minnesota, on July 3rd, 1889. They farmed in Minnesota and North Dakota, and for a time, Mr. Hanson was engaged in the real estate business. They moved to Alberta, Canada, in 1913, where they lived until 1919, when they came to Montana, establishing a ranch near Whitlash. Mr. Hanson died in 1929, and Mrs. Hanson moved to Chester where she had resided continuously since that time. She was born March 23, 1871, and was 70 years, 10 months and twenty-five days old at the time of her death.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Harry Hoffner, of Chester, and Mrs. Jane Gifford, of Minot, North Dakota, and two sons. Chris and Clifford Hanson, of Chester: twenty grand children and seven great grand children. She was a member of the Lutheran church and Mercy Rebekah Lodge of Chester.
Funeral services will be held in the Methodist church in Chester Saturday afternoon, February 21st, with Rev. A.B. Holland, pastor of the Lutheran church of Fairfield, in charge. Burial will be in the Chester cemetery.
