Falling ill during an otherwise uneventful expedition to Monocacy Junction, Frederick County, Maryland, in June 1862, he was admitted to the military hospital at Fort McHenry, Baltimore, Maryland, and discharged the service by surgeon's certificate August 21, 1862. He also enlisted in Harrisburg September 1, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 8 as an unassigned private with the 200th Pennsylvania Infantry (also reported in Co.
