John was the son of William McCainie Potillo and Nancy Catherine Stump Potillo. He married Birdie Ethel Starkey on July 25, 1922. They had six children: Lola Irene Hillis, John William Potillo, Paul Eugene Potillo, Alvern Byford Potillo, Vernon Ray Potillo, and Katherine Nannie Turner. John and Paul died as babies. John trapped, sold hides, sharecropped, and made railroad ties. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening, and knew about all there was to know about nature. He gardened well into his 90's and preferred wild game to store-bought meat. Although he seldom attended church, he was a member of Agee Community Church. He moved to Texas with his daughter in October 1994 and lived there till he died.
