Mr. J. B. Merriman of Spencer, died at his home on Wednesday morning. The end came suddenly, he being in apparently good health at the time of his demise.
He was one of the boys who at age 17 answered the call of the Southland in this county, when it seemed necessary for the very flower of the South to place itself on the alter in defense of Principle, Justice and Honor.

Since the days of the fratricidal struggle, he lived on a farm near Spencer, Va., and has been held in the highest esteem by all who knew him.

At the time of his death he was a little past 79 years of age.

He leaves the following children: Five daughters: Mrs. R. W. Grogan, Mrs. G. D. DeShazo and Mrs. W. T. Hensley of Spencer, Mrs. Darian Smith of Roanoke and Mrs. Morgan Grogan of Martinsville. Four sons also survived: O. I. Merriman of Spencer, J. A. and Marvin of Fieldale, and David of Winston-Salem, N.C.

He was buried at Old Well Cemetery.
