Joseph N.Phelan Sr.
From find a grave visitor on July 9, 2011: Believed to be the same Joseph N. Phelan who died in a plane crash with her father,Lieut Herman R. Wade, May 17, 1945. They were both Lts., stationed in Texas. The accident report shows his birthdate as 1912 and that he had been overseas. They were both pilots. Visitor had no way to prove this is the same person. Came from accident report. Recall from my childhood that this information is true. A search of cemetery where Lieut. Phelan's wife & son are buried turned up no grave.

The following summary, based on the AAF Accident Report, can be found on Page 1097, Volume 3,
FATAL ARMY AIR FORCES AVIATION ACCIDENTS IN THE UNITED STATES 1941-1945

5-17-45. Bunger, Texas. At 1250 CWT, a Vultee BT-13B crashed 13 miles southeast of Bunger, Texas, killing pilots 1Lt. Joseph N. Phelan and 1Lt. Herman R. Wade. The airplane took off at 1135 CWT from Fort Worth Army Air Field, Fort Worth, Texas, on a routine pilot proficiency flight. Witnesses on the ground observed the subject airplane flying with another BT-13 type airplane at low altitude over Possum Kingdom Lake. The airplanes approached the hilly terrain near the lake at very low altitude, barely clearing a 200-foot hill. The lead airplane flew over the top and the subject airplane banked away to the right in a climbing turn, disappearing behind the hills. The subject airplane returned to the area of the lake at low altitude and repeated the course it had flown previously. The airplane, while flying at very low altitude, collided with the terrain in a flat attitude, collapsing the landing gear and breaking the fuselage behind the rear cockpit. The engine separated and came to rest several yards ahead of the wreckage. The airplane did not burn. There were no witnesses to the actual crash. Lt. Wade died about two hours after the accident.
