| Birth: | Jul. 15, 1839 | | Death: | Jul. 8, 1906 |  Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, US Congressman. At the start of the Civil War, he enrolled in the Union Army as a 1st lieutenant in the 3rd Regiment, West Virginia Volunteer Cavalry. He served with the 3rd West Virginia Cavalry the entire war, being promoted Lieutenant Colonel in command and was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers in June 1865. After the war, he was elected a member of the West Virginia State House of Delegates and Secretary of State of West Virginia, serving 1865 to 1869.
