(Billy) Condon, 57, member of a family long identified with the business and social life of Memphis, and husband of Marguerite Piazza, former opera star and nationally known night club singer and entertainer, died shortly before 9 a.m. today at Baptist Hospital. Mr. Condon was a vice-president of Conwood Corporatation and an officer and a director of several other Memphis leading industries. Born in Pelham Manor, N.Y., he came to Memphis with his family when he was two. He graduated from old Memphis University School and Lawrenceville and the University of Virginia and served 28 months overseas with the Navy in World War II, rising from Liutinent to Lt. Commander. He returned to Baptist about three weeks ago. He died of heart failure. MARGUERITE PIAZZA, SNUFF EXECUTIVE, WED IN MISSISSIPPI - Jackson, Mississippi - Opera and television singing star Marguerite Piazza married William Condon, a Memphis, Tenn., snuff executive, in a small wedding here last night after playing hide and seek with reporters. The couple was married after attempts to elope quietly to a small North Mississippi town backfired when the beautiful singer was recognized. Thus thwarted, the couple drove to Jackson and were married by Justice of the Peace J. Thornton Hale at his office at 7 p.m. It was Miss Piazza's third marriage; Condon's second. She is about 33 and he is 45. Friends said the singer was hoping to keep the marriage quiet until Monday because of a court action at Memphis where she is contesting the will of her late husband, J. Graves McDonald who died in New York last December. The start's first marriage was to Karl Kritz, New York symphony director. It was annulled. She has one son, Gregory Kritz, aged 7, by this marriage. McDonald, her second husband, was a wealthy Memphis appliance dealer who retired to become her manager. He died in December, leaving the bulk of his estate to their 2-year-old son, J. Graves McDonald Jr. (Published in the Sarasota Herald-Tribute on July 17, 1953)
