Dick was a son of George Henry Hersey & Lotta Viola Story.
He was married on 20 Jul 1940 at St.Albans, Franklin County, Vermont by Ferdinand William Eugel to Kathleen Mary Fadden.
They had 3 children: Sue Ann Hersey; Richard Henry Hersey, Jr.; and Betsey Jane Hersey.
ST. ALBANS, VT - Mr. Richard Henry Hersey, Sr., a lifelong city resident, passed away peacefully early Saturday, June 12, 2010. He was born in St. Albans on December 21, 1917, the son of the late George H. and Lotta (Story) Hersey. In 1940, he married the former Kathleen Mary Fadden of Swanton, who preceded him in death on September 27, 2007.
A 1937 graduate of Bellows Free Academy, he was then an apprentice machinist at the Central Vermont Railroad, and later joined his father in the plumbing and heating business until the start of World War II, when he went to work at Champlain Motors on war contracts. He was a licensed master plumber and licensed master electrician who had the distinction of obtaining one of the first plumbers licensed in the State. In 1957, he became employed as a toolmaker by Union Carbide Corporation and retired after 26 years of service.
After retirement, he enjoyed spending much of his leisure time with his wife, Kay, at his cottage, which he built in West Sumner. He was a devoted family man who loved his home and family. He was an active member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, where he served on the Board of Trustees, was a member of the Phi Alpha Class and the Men's Breakfast Club. A 62-year member of Franklin Lodge #4, F&AM, member of the Scottish Rite Masons and Knights Templar, and a lifetime member of Mt. Sinai Temple #3, A.A.O.N.M.S., he was a Sinai Aide for many years and Chief Aide to the Potentate in 1981.
He also was a member of the Royal Order of Jesters for sixteen years, past president of the Northern Vermont Shrine Club, and a charter member, Corps Master and Secretary of the Northern Vermont Shrine Motor Corps, a lifetime and honorary member, past president and Emeritus Trustee of the Owl Club. He was also a lifelong member of St. Albans Lodge #1566, B.P.O.E.
Survivors include his daughters, Sue H. Tessier of St. Albans and Betsey Szatkowski and her husband, Eugene of South Burlington; his son, Richard Hersey, Jr. and his wife, Sandy of Swanton; grandchildren, Katy Collin and her husband, Jonathon of St. Albans, Ed Tessier and his wife, Carrie of Nashville, TN, Amy Williams and her husband, Brian of Deer Park, WA, Richard Hersey III and his wife, Fiona of Devon, England, Cory Paquette and his wife, Tamiko of Hinckley, Tonya Lulek and her husband, Bill of St. Albans, Merrill Hersey and his companion, Keeli of Highgate, Kerry Batres and her husband, Byron of Williston and Jessica Bongard and her husband, Josh of Burlington; great-grandchildren, Addie Sue Collin, Alex and Jeremiah Batres, Grace Hersey, Cameron, Cody and Caleb Lulek, Monica, Alissa, Yuliah Paquette and Sarah Elizabeth Tessier and his younger sister, Ruth Hersey Cooper of Buckfield.
He was predeceased by five older brothers, Herbert, Raymond, Harry, George and Albert and two older sisters, Bessie and Zelma Hersey Hamm McFaul. He was also predeceased by a younger sister, Alice, and a younger brother, Sam.
Mr. Hersey had many friends and relatives in the Oxford Hills area. He was a descendant of Revolutionary War patriot, James Hersey of West Sumner, and is featured in the 1998 Bicentennial History - Sumner 200.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 17, at 11 a.m. in St. Paul's United Methodist Church on Church Street. His family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the service.
