Alexander G. Pickens was born on 16 May 1817 in Hardin or Maury County, Tennessee (there is some records which list his birth as Long Cane, Abbeville County, South Carolina, although his siblings were born in Tennessee). There is some controversy over the birth date, as well. It is listed in some records as 1814 and others as 1816. His father was John G. Pickens (1780-1871) and his mother was Mary O. "Polly" Curry (1781-1858). He was ninth of 12 children.
He was a farmer. He married Mahala Robinson on 19 Jun 1837 in Hardin County, Tennessee. Mahala is buried elsewhere, although there is a more recent erected monument that says "Mother Pickens" at the same cemetery. It is believed she is buried in Alabama.
Their children were:
Elizabeth Ann "Betsy" Pickens Covey (1840-1904)
James Oliver Pickens (1841-1937)
Mary Ann Pickens Alexander Stewart (1843-1897)
