Edna Carolyn Briggs Brashier, born May 1, 1928, died Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at age 81 after a brief illness. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and a true Southern lady. Edna held a bachelor's degree in home economics from Louisiana Tech University and a master's degree in education from Southern University. She taught at Eden Park Elementary School in Baton Rouge until her retirement. Edna was a member of the Eastern Star, Daughters of the American Revolution and Kappa Delta sorority. She attended First United Methodist Church in Baton Rouge and was a member of Plantation United Methodist Church in Plantation, Fla.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Lawrence B. "L.B." Brashier Jr., of Baton Rouge and Plantation; son, John David Brashier and wife Claire, of St. Gabriel; daughter, Catherine Brashier Torielli and husband John Thomas Torielli III, of Menomonee Falls, Wis.; grandson, 2nd Lt. Paul Evan Brashier, U.S. Marine Corps, 29 Palms, Calif.; granddaughters, Anne Rene Brashier and husband Brian Grannan, of Culver City, Calif., Emilie Frances Torielli, of West Lafayette, Ind., and Adrienne Camille Torielli, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and grandson, Michael David Torielli, of Menomonee Falls. She is also survived by a brother, Henry Delos Briggs, of Oak Grove; two sisters, Martha Briggs Baxter, of St. Louis, and Charlotte Briggs Scott, of Lake Providence; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ollie and Edna Savannah Harper Briggs; sisters, Elaine Briggs Fleming and Frances Briggs Kuykendall; brother, John C. Briggs; and son and daughter-in-law Lawrence Bell Brashier III and Leslie Kantner Brashier.

Graveside services will be held at Greenoaks Memorial Park, 9595 Florida Blvd., on Monday, June 8, at 11 a.m., followed by visitation at the home of Mr. and Mrs. David Brashier.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her name be made to the Louisiana Methodist Children's Home, P.O. Box 929, Ruston, LA 71273-9976 or a charity of choice.
