James was the son of Moses & Fannie Cheatham Grimes. He married Mollie Delaney, the daughter of William H. & Asenith Hodge Delaney, on November 25, 1897 in Jessamine County. Their marriage ended in divorce and Mollie married Charles Davis. No children were born of either of Mollie's marriages. Mr. Grimes did not marry again. He earned his living by working as a farmer.

Note: The 1870 year of birth, which is inscribed upon his headstone, was also given by the informant (his sister, Pauline) on his DC. That year of birth is incorrect and would drastically change his birth order among his siblings. In both censuses where he lived in his parent's home and on his marriage license to Mollie Delaney, his age was listed as b. 1864.
Note: This is probably the "Jim Grimes" who is named as the father of Nannie Shearer/Middleton Grimes' children. The fact that a child was named Moses (his father's name) points to the fact that he is their father. I cannot find a marriage record for the couple. The 1890 census, where they may have been living together as a family, was lost in a fire.
