Calvin Hambleton Carlen passed away Friday afternoon, June 4, 2010, at age 91 in Fort Worth. Service: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at South Hills Baptist Church at 7350 Granbury Road, Fort Worth. Interment: 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Laurel Land Funeral Home at 7100 Crowley Road, Fort Worth. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Calvin's name to South Hills Baptist Church building fund. Mr. Carlen was born in Hatboro, Pa., on April 8, 1919, to Bernard Strickler Carlen and Myra Reading Hambleton. Calvin was the fourth of nine children. He spent most of his formative years in Pennsylvania before he joined the Army Air Corps in 1941. He trained military pilots during World War II. In 1946 he joined the Texas Air National Guard stationed in Dallas. Calvin retired from the military in 1979 having attained the rank of major. After leaving the military full time, he went to work for Harman Electrical Contractors and retired from there in 1981. Calvin married Jo Berle Johnson on Jan. 16, 1944, and had two children. After a wonderful 36 years of marriage, Jo passed away in 1980. Calvin remarried in 1981 to Thelma Marie Crowley and together enjoyed over 28 years of marriage. Survivors: Wife, Thelma M. Carlen; son, Calvin "Hamby" Carlen Jr.; stepsons, Donald Crowley and Larry Crowley; grandchild, Daniella Pappas; stepgrandchildren, Josh Crowley, Revel Crowley, Michael Crowley, Ashley Crowley, Ava Crowley and Kathryn Crowley; great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Victoria Pappas; sisters, Virginia Bowman, Ruth Welsh and Jean Berg; and many, many nieces and nephews.
