John A. Schilling, Jr., 78, of rural Hiawatha, KS, died Thursday afternoon, September 14, 2006.

John was born March 23, 1928, on the family farm south of Hiawatha, one of three children of John A. Sr. and Martha Herman Schilling and lived his entire life south of Hiawatha. He grew up south of Hiawatha, attended Union country school No. 24 prior to graduating from Hiawatha High School with the class of 1946. John enlisted with the 2 BN, 130th FA, Kansas National Guard of Hiawatha and served from 1948 until being discharged in 1952. He farmed and raised livestock south of Hiawatha his entire life. Through the years, in addition to farming, he also worked construction for Spaulding's and the Winslow's prior to serving as the manager of Twombly Grain.

Mr. Schilling was a member of the Christ Church of Hiawatha. He also served on the board for Union School District No. 24, of Hiawatha. In the early 1970's, he was listed as one of the top 10 farmers in Brown County.

He married Vera Ellen Gibson, June 28, 1949, at the Bethany Church in Hiawatha. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1999. She survives.

Also surviving are a son Richard Schilling and wife Lucinda of rural Hiawatha; two daughters Mary Schilling of Marysville, Becky Steele and husband Bob, Hiawatha; a brother George Schilling, a sister, Mary Cummings, both of Hiawatha; four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services are planned for 11 a.m. Monday, September 18, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha. Interment will follow at Hiawatha Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. Sunday where the family will meet with friends from 2 until 4 that afternoon.
