He graduated from St John's College in Annapolis, Maryland in 1907 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He then served in the US Army in the enlisted ranks, rose to the rank of sergeant, then was commissioned as a second lieutenant upon passing competitive examinations at Ft Leavenworth, Kansas in 1911. He continued to rise in the officer ranks to become a full colonel and commanded the US Army's large Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot during World War II.
