Col Kimball's military career spanned over 36 years in the US Army Cavalry and Quartermaster Corps. He attended preparatory school at Dickinson Seminary, Williamsport, PA 1879-1981, He attended the US Military Academy, West Point, NY 1881-1882. He graduated from Yale University, New Haven, CT and Columbia University, New York City, NY in 1885. He then entered the US Army as 2nd Lieutenant and served with the 7th Calvary in the Spanish American War and in the Philippine Insurrection. In 1901, he became Captain in the Quartermaster Corps at the Presidio in San Francisco, CA. He served again in the Philippine Islands, at Fort Snelling, MN, Governor's Island, NY, Fort Russell, WY and Texas City, TX, rising to the rank of Colonel by 1917. In World War I, he installed and commanded the Quartermaster Depots in both Atlanta and Baltimore and then was given the temporary rank of Brigadier General while serving in Europe during and shortly after World War I. In 1919, he was appointed Quartermaster of the 7th Corps Area Service Command with responsibility for the states of Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North and South Dakota and Wyoming.
