October 15, 1908-Arlington Review Herald- George Harding Jewett
After a lingering Illness an Old Citizen Passes Away

Mr. George H. Jewett died at his home in this city Thursday, October 15, after a lingering illness. Mr. Jewett was a native of Rochester, New York, where he received his education, and from which place he enlisted in Co. E. 142d N.Y. Vol. At the close of the war he received an honorable discharge, and turned his footsteps toward this, then, new country beyond the Missouri, occupying various positions in government employ- first as quartermaster's clerk at fort Rice, then Post trader at Fort Randall. On the opening up of the Black Hills country he became actively engaged in the transportation of government freight from Sidney to Deadwood, and resided at Sidney for a number of years, representing his district in the State Senate and was well and favorably known among the progressive men of his day. He was at one time Post Master at Sidney. About 1885 Mr. Jewett removed to Ft. DuQuesne, where for years he occupied the position as Post trader, returning with his family to Arlington in 1891, where his home has been ever since, and where a wife and three sons mourn his loss. Mr. Jewett was the eldest of his family- one brother and six sisters surviving him. He was a member of Tangier Temple of Omaha. Many will remember Mr. Jewett as a generous friend and bear just tribute to his worth.
