In 1850, he was living with his parents and siblings on their plantation in District 9, Camden County, Georgia. His father was a wealthy planter, and slave holder, from South Carolina. The household included: Alexander Scott, age 43, planter, $6000, born in South Carolina; Eliza, age 40, born in Georgia; Thomas, age 15, born in Georgia; Alexander, age 10, born in Georgia; and Julia Ann, age 17, born in Georgia.
In 1860, he was living with his parents on their plantation in Clarks District, Camden County, Georgia. At that time, his father had $7000 in real property and $58,074 in slaves and other personal property. The household included: A C Scott, age 53, born in South Carolina, a planter; E., age 50, born in Georgia; Thos E., age 26, born in Georgia; A, age 20, a medical student born in Georgia; and M. Brazill, age 60, a midwife born in South Carolina.
After the Civil War, his father's fortunes diminished when his slaves were freed. He remained on his plantation near Waverly, Georgia, but he only had land valued at $3000 and personal property of $3000.
Thomas married Mary Julia Clark in 1865, right after the war. They would have nine children.
In 1870, they were living in Satilla Mills, Camden County, where he was working as a lumberman. They had personal property valued at $500 but no real property. The household included Thomas at age 35; M. J., age 29; their son T. E., age 4; and their son A. C., age 2.
In 1880, they were living in Satilla Mills, Georgia (Camden County). The household included: Thomas E., age 45, merchandising; Mary J., age 39; Thomas E., age 14; Alexander C., age 11; Catherine B., age 7; Henry E., age 3; and Beatrice, age 6 months.
By 1900, they were living in Waverly, Georgia (Camden County), on a farm they owned free and clear. The household included: Thomas E. Scott, born August 1834, married 35 years, born in Georgia to a father from South Carolina and a mother from Georgia; Mary J., age 59, married 35 years, seven living children of nine born, born in Georgia to a father born in Maine and a mother born in Georgia; Annie, born January 1880; and Cornelia, born June 1885.
