John was the eldest of seven children born to William G. and Caroline M. Thompson, who were among the early pioneers of Warrick Co., Indiana. On February 15, 1864 he enlisted as a private in Company E, 120th Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry and was an active participant in the battles of Nashville, Franklin and others. He was discharged at Raleigh, N.C. on January 8, 1866, and returned to Warrick Co. On May 28, 1863, he married Sarah Elizabeth Mills.
