Jacob was born November 27, 1756, and was baptized December 4, 1765 at the Bethel Moravian Church in Lickdale, Pa. He met and married Susanna (Buckwalter) Lane who had 4 children by her first marriage. Shortly after marrying they settled in Berkeley Co., Va (now West Virginia) on a 68 acre farm. In 1792 they moved to Rockingham Co., VA and sold the first farm. On April 22, 1792 they purchased 164 acres on Looney Creek, a branch of the James River 5 miles from Fincastle, Virgina, in Botatourt County. They died at the farm and were laid to rest there; the stones have weathered and are unreadable. Upon Jacob's death, the farm was sold for $12,000 to his oldest son, Joseph, on May 30, 1828, which he then held until 1836 when he moved to Montgomery Co., Ohio.

Jacob and Susanna had seven children:
Joseph, Jacob, Elizabeth, John, Magdalena, Samuel and Anna.
