He was born June 13, 1918, in Aliquippa, Pa., and lived in Lorain for many years.

He graduated from Lorain High School with the Class of 1936-B and later attended Niagara School of Speech and Psychology, Cleveland Art School, Fenn College industrial division and Lorain County Community College.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard a destroyer escort in the South Pacific and at Okinawa.

Popovich was employed at American Crucible Co. for 43 years, retiring in 1982 as a service engineer.

He played professional baseball in Orlando, Fla., and Kinston, N.C., and enjoyed writing; one of his short stories, ''Sea Shell Shall Tide No More,'' was published in Cleveland. He was a member of the Oberlin Golf Club and was also instrumental in organizing and hosting luncheons for American Crucible retirees for many years. He was a member of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, Lorain, where he served as a Eucharistic minister since 1987, was a rector and was active in the Cursillo Movement.

Survivors include his sons David Popovich of Massillon and Daniel Popovich of Lorain; daughters Ruth Popovich of North Ridgeville and Susan Dineen of Minneapolis; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and sisters Helen Mitro of Martinez, Ga., and Irene Dombrowski of Lorain. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian (nee Hodkey), in 1988; and parents, George and Helen (nee Salata) Popovich.

Friends may call Wednesday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., at Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain. Services at the funeral home Thursday at 9:30 a.m. will be followed at 10 a.m. by Mass in Nativity B.V.M. Catholic Church, 1454 Lexington Ave. The Rev. Robert Glepko, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
