One of at least four children of Alice A. Basim and John Howard Haddow. His siblings included: Dora Amanda Haddow, Ray Haddow, and an infant brother. His mother died in 1898 and the children were sent to live with relatives. In the 1900 Federal Census for Barlow, Ohio (Washington County), Dora and Ray were living with a 32 year-old uncle, their mother's brother Charles Basim. In 1910, at age 24, Dora was living in Barlow with her 85 year-old paternal grandmother Jane Colville Fleming Haddow.
Donald had been adopted by one of his mother's younger sisters, Linnie Basim and her husband Rufus W. Athey. Donald would keep the Athey name the rest of his life.
In the 1900 Federal Census for Marietta, Ohio (Washington County), Donald was living with the Athey family. The household, all born in Ohio to parents from Ohio, included: R. W. Athey, age 33, born October 1869, married eight years, a physician; Line Athey, age 31, born January 1869, married eight years, no children; Lucie Basim, age 27, born October 1872 (sic)D in law, (actually sister-in-law as she was Linnie Basim Athey's younger sister), single; and Danold Athie, adopted son, age 7, born August 1892.
The Ohio County Marriages, 1789-1994 shows that on September 27, 1915, in Washington County, Ohio, Donald B. Athey, age 23, who was born in Barlow, Ohio, foster son of R. W. Athey and Linnie Basim married Mary Anna Chamberlain, age 18, born in Durant, Oklahoma, daughter of D. E. Chamberlain and Fannie Durant.
Donald's World War I Draft Registration Cards show that Donald Basim Athey, born August 24, 1892, in Barlow, Ohio, currently married and living in Marietta, Ohio, registered for the draft in June 1917 in Marietta, Ohio (Washington County).
In 1916 and 1919, Donald's wife Mary Ann appears with Donald as "Mariana" in the Marietta, Ohio City Directory .
Mariana gave birth to a baby girl, Mariana Athey, born November 28, 1918 in Marietta, Ohio (Washington County). Mary Anna, Donald, and their one year one month old daughter Mary Anna appear in the 1920 Federal Census for Marietta, Ward 2, Ohio (Washington County). Donald was working as sales manager of oil well supplies. Their child, Mariana, according to her death certificate, died in Marietta, Ohio on March 11, 1920 at the age of 1 year 3 months and 12 days, and was buried there in the Oak Grove Cemetery. Cemetery records show that on May 5, 1920, Donald and his adoptive father, Rufus Athey, bought a cemetery plot containing five spaces, one of which was for his daughter Mariana. One month later, his adoptive father died and was laid to rest in another of the spaces. His adoptive mother was buried there ten years later.
Donald and Mariana had a second child on February 10, 1921, their daughter Martha Lyn, who was born in New Mexico. By 1930, Donald, Mariana, and their daughter Martha were living in Russell, Kansas (Russell County), where Donald was working as a clerk for an oil supply company.
In 1941, Donald and Mariana appear in the Portsmouth, Ohio City Directory.
Donald died September 16, 1972 in Marietta Memorial Hospital in Marietta, Ohio (Washington County), and was buried with his daughter and adoptive parents in Marietta in the Oak Grove Cemetery. At the time of his death, his surviving daughter, Martha Lyn Neese was living in Alexandria, Virginia. His wife, Mariana, was not mentioned in his obituary as a survivor but, according to her headstone and cemetery records, Mariana died in 1996, was cremated, and subsequently was buried next to Donald in the Oak Grove Cemetery.
