George Oenslager was born in Harrisburg, Pa. on Sept. 25, 1873 to John Oenslager and Harriet Frainer. He attended Harrisburg & Phillips Exeter Academies, AB 1894, AM 1896. He first worked for the Warren Paper Co in Maine from 1896 untill 1905. Then went to work for the Diamond & B.F. Goodrich Rubber Companies from 1905 untill 1940. George inflated the first Hydrogen Balloon in the US during World War I. He was a member of the Perkin Metal Society American Chemical Engineers, Charles Goodyear Metal American Chemical Society, Dr. Chemical University of Akron 1939, Fellow British Rubber Industry & American Geor. Soc. George married Ruth Alderfer on July 15, 1939. Vestry Man St. Paul's Episcopal Church. He was a classical scholar and an archeologist. He was also a lover and patron of the arts. He was a Christian gentleman. His gravestone reads..."Beloved and inspiring companion of Yokahama Rubber Co., 1919 - 1922." He made rubber a chemical substance. George Oenslager died at sea on Feb. 5, 1956. His remains were returned to Akron, Ohio.
