Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Alderson Cemetery, west of Atchison. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions in honor of Mr. Underwood are suggested to the Alderson Cemetery, First Christian Church or the Atchison Hospital Hospice and may be left in care of the funeral home. Courtney was born May 5, 1924 in Lancaster Township the son of the late Courtney N. and Lila (Chalfant) Underwood, Sr.
He graduated from Atchison High School in 1942. Courtney was involved in agriculture his entire life. He was on the Soil Conservation Board, a clerk on the Good Intent School Board, District 12, was a member of the Farm Bureau, Atchison Co-op and he was a 3rd Degree Mason in the Active Masonic Lodge #158. Courtney enjoyed gardening, fishing and hunting.
Courtney married Wanda C. Heyle on January 28, 1949 in Kansas City, KS. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include a son, Courtney Underwood III and his wife Joan, Atchison, KS; sisters, Shirley Auchard, Springfield, IL; Hope Underwood, Sun City, AZ; Gail Grill, Denver, CO; grandchildren, Jeremy (Julie) Underwood, Candi (Amos) Hale and Chris Underwood, all of Atchison, KS, 2 great-grandchildren, Ethan Hale and Samuel Underwood and one more on the way.
