Judge Hugh Banta Fatally Stricken By Heart Attack
Well Known Jurist Had Served 7 years on Parke Bench
Judge Hugh H. Banta, age 70, of the Parke Circuit Court, was fatally stricken with a heart attack at 4:30 Tuesday afternoon. Although he had been in failing health for a number of months, his sudden death came as a complete shock to his many friends throughout Parke county and the state of Indiana.
He had been in the office of his wife, Beatrice, and had crossed the street when he felt ill. He stopped at the Rusk Cleaners and said he thought he would rest for a moment. He sat down in a chair and almost immediately passed away. Coronary thrombosis was given as the cause of death.
Judge Banta, a Democrat, was first elected to the Parke Circuit bench in 1948 and was re-elected to the judgeship in 1954. A native of Parke County he practiced law in Rockville for a number of years before serving a term as prosecutor.
He was retained in the legal department of the Louisville Land Bank for a number of years preceding 1936 when he accepted a post with the Internal Revenue Department at Indianapolis, after which he returned to Rockville.
Judge Banta was a member of the Parke County, Sixth District and Indiana Bar Associations, the Kingman Lodge, F. & A. M.; Indianapolis Consistory, Scottish Rite Masons and the Rockville Methodist Church.
He was born Dec. 29, 1885, the son of Joe and Armilda Allen Banta, in Howard Township, moving to Sugar Creek Township shortly after his birth.
Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Beatrice Banta, one son, Capt. Hugh V. Banta with the U. S. Air Force at San Antonio, Tex; two brothers, Bruce Banta of Rockville and Emory Banta of Covington, and two sisters, Mrs. Grace Martin of Pittsboro and Mrs. Effie Bowman of Veedersburg.
He served overseas during World War I with the Salvation Army.
Funeral services will be held at 1 o'clock Friday afternoon at the Branson funeral home, with burial in Memory Garden cemetery.
The Rev. Chester Mahan and the Rev. Hugh Craven will officiate.
