George W. Stickel was 39 when he enlisted in Co. C of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Sept 15, 1862. He was promoted to 5th Corporal (Cpl) on Nov 21, 1862; to 4th Cpl Jan 1, 1863; and to 3rd Cpl June 10, 1863.

On Feb 9, 1864, Stickel was reduced in rank, and then appointed 8th Cpl; then promoted back to 7th Cpl on Oct 22, 1864; and finally to 6th Cpl on May 18, 1864. He was mustered out of the service on June 17, 1864 in Nashville as his term of enlistment was due to expire prior to Oct. 1st.

His widow filed her claim for the widow's pension on Feb. 10, 1880, on application #259,900. Her certificate was #197,240. A minor child also filed on application #832,225, and certificate #600,826.

Many records show him as "C.W." as the "G" likely has been faded.
