Obituary from Delawareonline.com published May 19, 2010:
Florence Irene Thomas
Age 95, passed away on May 16, 2010.
Irene had resided at Forwood Manor since August of 2004. Irene was the only child of the late Dick H. Thomas, a prominent Pittsburgh pharmacist and Florence Dewalt Thomas. Irene was born in Pittsburgh, PA but spent the first year of her life in Denver, CO. She was a graduate of South Hills High School in Pittsburgh, Penn Hall Junior College in Chambersburg, PA and Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University.) Although her Bachelor's degree was in Clothing, she pursued a business career in both Industry and Education, retiring from Winchester Thurston School as Administrative Assistant in 1979. Irene had a full life although handicapped by a stroke in 1994.
Her interests were many and at different seasons of her life she was active in the AAUW, The Early American Glass Club, the Embroiders Guild of America, the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania and the Genealogical Society of Western Pennsylvania. Church was always a major part of her life and she used her interest in writing and photography as outreach. During World War II she wrote a newsletter to the service men and women in her Sunday School class.
For a time, she was a writer and photographer for the newsletter of the East Liberty Presbyterian Church, where she was an elder. In 1990 she changed her affiliation to the Episcopal Church of the Ascension and was active in the Altar Guild and, for 13 years, wrote a monthly column for the newsletter, profiling a member of the congregation. She was very proud that her last column appeared the month of her 90th birthday.
Irene is survived by her cousins, Dorothy Jennings of Alhambra, CA; Rosemary Sterbank of University Heights, OH and Selma McLaughlin of Chesapeake, VA. She is also survived by friends Sylvia and John Smrz of Wilmington, DE.
A memorial service will be held at St. David's Episcopal Church, 2320 Grubb Rd. Wilmington, 19810 on Monday May 24, at 10 am. with interment in the Memorial Garden.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Davis's Episcopal Church or to the Florence Irene Thomas, MM'37 Memorial Scholarship Fund, Carnegie Mellon University, 5000 Forbes Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15213-3890.
