When Meta Settje was born on January 20, 1902, in Nebraska, her father, John Settje, was 43 and her mother, Bertha Scheffler, was 35. Her father John was an immigrant from Germany, and her mother Bertha was the daughter of an East Prussian family that had immigrated to the Ukraine before Bertha's birth there. The family subsequently immigrated to America, where John and Bertha met and married. Meta was the seventh of the eight children born to that union. At the age of 19, she married Louis Herman Meyer on April 6, 1921, in Creston, Nebraska. Over the course of 21 years, Meta had six sons and one daughter by Louis. Louis suffered paralysis from a stroke during his later years, and Meta cared for him at their home in Fremont, Nebraska up until the time of his death in 1968. Even after a marriage of about 47 years, she was a widow for nearly a quarter century. She lived long enough that two of her sons, Ralph at 70 and Ken at 60, predeceased her. An unassuming kindness and sweetness consistently characterized all of her dealings. She experienced a genuine glee when she encountered members of her families and found special joy in family reunions held in Creston over the years. Meta died on February 25, 1992, in Fremont, Nebraska, at the age of 90, and was buried in the same cemetery where her husband and several of her children are buried.
