Helen Theresa Christ April 22,1890-Oct 25,1956
Helen Theresa Christ was born April 22, 1899 in Madrid. She became a resident of North Platte in 1918, where she lived the rest of her life. Her husband was Adam M. Christ and they had two children.Helen was a member of several civic groups. When the war broke out, she volunteered tirelessly at the North Platte Canteen. Not only was she one of the original Canteen workers, she also was its president. The North Platte Canteen, because of the finances and labor involved, was organized and operated as a business. The center experienced periodic cash shortages during its first two years, but from then on voluntary cash contributions paid all bills promptly and maintained a sizable bank balance.According to Canteen records, the total value of the food donated during its operation would be a guess. Only during March 1945 was an exact list of contributed food kept. The retail value of the contributed items at that time was about $6,250. Like many of the original Canteen workers, Helen cherished her part in the North Platte Canteen.Helen died in her home after a long illness in 1957; she was just 57.
