Birth: Apr. 1, 1820
Orange County
Indiana, USA
Death: Mar. 4, 1897
Clayton County
Iowa, USA

Washington Maxwell birth date is given in the Revolutionary War Pension File Number 9178 of Henry Sanders, his grandfather on his mother's side of the family. This date is different from the date on his tombstone. It is believed that Washington's mother died about 1828 leaving four young sons, his father died when Washington was 19 years of age. Washington and Leah Mitchell were married in McLean County, Illinois by Abner Peeler, M. G. (Book 4 page 159). They remained in Illinois for about 7 years before migrating to Jones County, Iowa, then on to Clayton County, Iowa. Leah's brother John Mitchell and his family migrated with them. By 1848 each family made a claim in Sperry Township, Clayton County, Iowa. Their land was located along Cox Creek and each family built a cabin near a spring.

On Mother's Side of the Family

My grandfather on my mother's side of the family was Washington Maxwell and his wife's name was Leah Mitchell, a mixture of Scotch and Irish. They lived on a farm on Cox Creek, Iowa. Here they raised a family of seven girls and two boys. As I recall them by names they were: Mary Jane, Elizabeth, Lucinda, Enfield, Henrietta, Dicey, Matilda, George and William. I could not be sure this is in their proper order as to age. Grandfather lived to be around 75 years old, and grandmother lived to be over 90 years old. I don't know their exact ages at death. Three of these girls- - Enfield, Henrietta, and Matilda-- married Brandenburg brothers. Enfield and Frank, Henrietta and Clinton, and Matilda and Douglas or D as he was called. They all settled on farms in Iowa near enough so that we could drive in latter years to visit them. They all pioneered; it was a very rugged life.
