Born in Mount Carmel, Illinois, to Herman and Kate Goesswein Graff Ludwig. By 1881, Lyell's parents and his four half-siblings, Andrew, Anna, Emma, and Lena Graff, had moved to Evansville Indiana, where Lyell was raised.

A bookkeeper by trade, Lyell worked for many years for his half-brother, Andrew Graff. Lyell married Glady Kuster in October 1909, and they had one son, Lyell Lester Ludwig.

In 1927, Lyell died in Evansville, of pulmonary tuberculosis.
