For thirteen seasons (1994 to 2006), he was a pitcher with the Detroit Tigers, Houston Astros, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets. Born Jose Desiderio Rodriguez (Lima) in Santiago, Dominican Republic, he was signed as an amateur free agent by Detroit in 1989. He broke into the Major Leagues on April 20, 1994 with the Tigers, and appeared in 3 games that season. After joining Houston in 1997, he appeared in 51 games out of the bullpen that year. The next season, he secured a spot in their starting rotation and notched 16 victories, which was topped by his 21 win year in 1999 (second place in the NL behind teammate Mike Hampton), earning him a place on the National League All-Star Team. During the remainder of his Major League career, Lima struggled with an inflated ERA. In 348 career regular season games, he complied an 89 win and 102 loss record with a lifetime 5.26 ERA in 1,567 innings pitched.
