TOIVO HEIKKINEN, 83, of Baraga passed away on Monday, January 11, 2010 at Marquette General Hospital where he had been a patient for several days. He was born in Watton, MI. on March 8, 1926 the son of the late Charles and Mary (Hiltunen) Heikkinen. Toivo attended school in Watton. He married the former Helvi Lahti on January 17, 1948 in Laurium, MI. Toivo had many jobs as a young man growing up including working in the woods. He worked at Republic Mine and the Tilden Mine. Toivo was a mill maintenance man at CCI and retired after working there for more then 40 years. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Covington and was instrumental in the development of the Covington Museum.
Mr. Heikkinen is survived by his loving wife Helvi, daughter Elaine (Ray) Johnson of Holland, MI. grandchild Cory (Lisa), great grandchildren Nickolas, and Nathan, and sister Elsie Nevala of L'Anse. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by his son Roger in 1987, an infant baby, and three sisters, Sylvia, Saimi, and Esther.
Funeral services for Mr. Heikkinen were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, January 15, 2010 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse with Pastor Mark Reinsch officiating. Spring interment will take place in the Covington Cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral chapel on Friday from 12 p.m. until the time of the service. Following the service the family invited friends to join them for fellowship and a luncheon in the Harrington Gathering Room, located at the funeral chapel.
