Melvin served as a Tech. 5, 115th Infantry, 29th Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Allegany County, Maryland prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army National Guard on February 3, 1941, prior to the war, in Cumberland, Maryland. He was noted at the time of his enlistment as being employed as a Stock Clerk and also as Single, without dependents.

He "Died Of Wounds" received during the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France during the war. He was awarded a Purple Heart.

SERVICES FRIDAY--Services for T-5 Melvin D. Redhead, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Redhead, 311 Massachusetts Avenue, who was killed in the D-Day invasion of France on June 6, 1944, will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in the Hafer Funeral Home by Rev. C.K. Welch, pastor of Bethany Evangelical United Brethren. His body will arrive here tomorrow. Military honors at the grave will be accorded by the 29th Division Association. He served as a combat medic with that division.
