42nd Los Angeles Mayor. He was elected mayor of Los Angeles, California after his predecessor was recalled because of corruption, and served from 1938 to 1953. He attended the University of Southern California School of Law, and, before receiving certification as a lawyer, worked as a reporter for newspapers in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Oakland. He is credited as the major force in cleaning up the city government of links to racketeering, graft, prostitution and gambling. He served on the Superior Court bench in Los Angeles for a total of 20 years before and after his mayoral term. His death occurred while driving when his car suddenly accelerated, drove into a parking lot and crashed into a brick wall at the age of eighty one. He was honored by the city as the first and only mayor to lie in state in the rotunda of Los Angeles City Hall. Bowron Square located in the Civic Center is dedicated to his memory as well as Bowron Road in the city of his birth, Poway, California.
