Son of Francis & Aplow[?] STRAUB (which is how he is name is spelled in the 1862 draft list). In 1860, lived in West Manchester Township, York County, PA. Married Mary R. Hutton May 11, 1865, in Baltimore, Maryland. A baker and wharf builder by occupations, he was described as "not over five feet tall" and "chunky." According to another witness, "He could talk good English but he showed the Dutch in him."
A Civil War veteran, who enlisted in York with Co. A, 87th Pa Inf, and served at the rank of private September 9, 1861 - October 13, 1864. Patient in Patterson Park U.S. General Hospital from mid-June 1863 until his discharge, during which time he was assigned as brigade baker. After his enlistment, he worked for a year in the commissary department at Patterson Park.
His obituary in the Baltimore American called him Joseph STUMP.
