Michael George Kaufman, 41, of Whitehall, MT has returned to the loving arms of our Heavenly Father. Michael was a victim of an accidental drowning in the swollen waters of the Jefferson River near Whitehall. He had been missing since April 23, 2010. The family is extremely grateful for the love and support received from the Whitehall community and from members of the Whitehall Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Your fasting, prayers, and thoughts have carried us through this difficult time.

Michael was born June 8, 1968, in Mansfield, Ohio, the son of William and Marlene Kaufman. Michael spent his childhood roaming the fields and woods of Hayesville, OH. He grew to love the outdoors and frequently adopted wildlife he encountered.

In 1985, Michael moved with his family to Utah, where he graduated from Union High School in Roosevelt. He later studied at Utah Valley University in Orem, UT. Michael married Stormy Nance on September 9, 1989. They were later divorced. This union produced the joys of Michael's life, daughter Kori, 19; and sons Kaleb, 16; Kaiden, 12; and Kolbe, 11. Michael loved his children and has always been so happy to have them sealed to him for time and all eternity in the Logan, UT temple. As a father, Mike excelled at focusing on his children individually and working to pass on his talents and knowledge to them.

Michael was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He has a strong testimony of the gospel and would chuckle when friends in town tried to convert him to their religion. He'd laugh and say, "Well I just try to convert them."

Michael made friends easily and was known for his cheerful countenance and helpful nature. Michael loved to laugh and will be remembered for his wit and his ability to have a good time. Having passed through many challenges himself, Michael found it easy to be sensitive and empathetic toward others.

Mike was a talented artist and was gifted with mechanical aptitude. He could repair almost anything, and if he couldn't repair it, he often found a better way to do things. His beautiful poetry, sketches, and artwork will be treasured by his children. Mike's childhood love for the outdoors never wavered as he grew into adulthood. His pastimes included hiking the mountains and exploring the woods, caves, and rivers surrounding Whitehall, where he lived with his three boys. Prior to moving to Whitehall, they lived in Orem, Utah along with daughter Kori. Mike also enjoyed reading and took great pride in his cooking--even discovering a talent for baking bread.

Michael we love you and miss you.

He is preceded in death by his father, William T. Kaufman, Sr.; maternal grandparents, George and Mildred Morris; paternal grandparents, Joseph and Florence Kaufman; aunts, Marilyn Alshouse, Mary Jean Morris, and Pauline Kaufman.

He is survived by his mother Marlene Kaufman Stapleton; daughter, Kori; sons Kaleb, Kaiden, and Kolbe; brother, Bill (Nadene) Kaufman; and sisters Malena Kaufman and Adrienne (Ryan) Mangus, as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
