BARTLEY, Mary Catherine. . Age 69. Tompkinsville, KY. Died 8 February 1992, Monroe County Medical Center, extended illness. Had retired 31 May 1991 after 33 years with the Monroe County School System. She taught her first school at Beech Grove, a one-room school located across the Cumberland River. When the present Tompkinsville Elementary School was built, she set up the first library in the school, attending Western Kentucky University at night and on Saturdays to obtain her Masters degree in library science. She had earlier received her BS degree and latter attained Rank 1, all from Western. Member Tompkinsville Church of Christ. Born 7 Oct, 1922, Barren Co KY; daughter of the late Josh and Florence (Walker) Peden; wife of Lester Bartley who survives. They were married 24 Jan 1942 in Spartansburg, SC near where he was stationed with the US Army at Camp Cross, SC. Also survived by: two daughters, Betty Gayle Shelman, Dothan, AL and Faye Patton, Bowling Green, KY; brother, John Peden, Glasgow; two sisters, Imo Gene Howard, Summer Shade, KY and Fannie Belle Smith, Glasgow; four grandsons, Stephen Shelman and Chris, Todd and Chad Patton; and a great-grandson, Stephen Hunter Shelman. Services: 2 pm Monday, 10 Feb, chapel of Yokley Funeral Home, Bro. Gerald Watt officiating; burial Monroe County Memorial Lawn. Pallbearers were her four grandsons plus Darrel Bartley and Andy Simmons. Honorary pallbearers: Bobby Tooley, Hughie England, Roger Deckard, George Miller, Sammie Carter, Dr. J. M.
