Clara May Ross, daughter of Edward Z. and Priscilla (Wentz) Ruby, was born May
23, 1887 in Russell County, KS near Bunker Hill. Her death occurred on Aug. 27,
1979 at St. John's Hospital in Salina, KS after several months of failing
health. Her age was 92 years, 3 months, and 4 days.
Clara lived her entire life in Russell County and received her basic education
in the Four Corners School south of Bunker Hill. In 1905 she was united in
marriage to Joseph Henry Ross. This union was blessed with nine children:
Edith, Ethel, Florence, Lee, Leo, Floyd, Viola, Clara and Joseph Jr.
Most of her life was lived on the family farm near Bunker Hill. After the death
of her husband, Joseph, on April 4, 1936, with the assistance of her children,
she operated the farm until she moved to Bunker Hill in 1946, later moving to
Russell in 1958. Evan after she left the farm, she maintained a very keen
interest in the farming activities and continued her participation in the
management of the farm.
Her life was devoted to her family, her children as they were growing and later
her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was
an avid baker and was always ready to provide the tasty goodies that the
children in her life came to expect when they visited her home.
She attended the Bunker Hill United Methodist Church while living in the
community and even after moving to Russell continued in the church quilting
group. She enjoyed the sewing and looked forward to the fellowship with her
friends at the quilting sessions.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph; one daughter,
