Bennie was born at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin, Travis County, Texas . . . and had celebrated his 62nd birthday just two weeks before his death in an accident in Collin County, Texas . . . he was named for his Uncle Bennie and Aunt Dorothy Lee because he was born on their 1st wedding anniversary . . . he spent most of his growing-up years on farmland in Oklahoma that had been in his family since the area was known as Indian Territory . . . Bennie was in the National Guard in Oklahoma and Texas for a total of eight years . . . he was a deputy with the Travis County Sheriff's Department before starting his own industrial vacuum business in the early 1980s . . . in 1986, Bennie and his wife (married 1975) rode horseback daily for about a month with the Texas Sesquicentennial Wagon Train . . . he thoroughly enjoyed many hobbies during his lifetime, including piloting his own Cessna and Bonanza airplanes, bow and arrow and black-powder hunting, elk hunting in Colorado, and dirt-track racing . . . that final hobby was not started until shortly before his 50th birthday . . . and he was still competing and winning at the time of his death . . . he enjoyed living out the life that was given him in the dash between the years . . .
