An only child, he was born Ronald James Padavona in Portsmouth, New Hampshire to an Italian family. He started his musical career in New York in 1957, playing in various bands first on bass and then switched to lead vocals. He took the name of Ronnie James Dio professionally in 1961. Dio joined the group Rainbow and they released their first album in 1975. Dio left Rainbow and joined Black Sabbath in 1979, replacing Ozzy Osbourne. He formed his own band, Dio, in 1982. In January 2007, Dio was inducted into the Rock Walk of Fame on Sunset Boulevard. (bio by: T.V.F.T.H.)
