William Riddle, a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, volunteered to serve during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848) and was chiefly responsible for the development and organization of the Louisville Legion. He came through the war as a highly respected leader and was elected as an Alderman for the 4th Ward. He was also a great believer in what the railroad could mean for Louisville.
The Louisville newspaper recognized him in the announcement of his death as the "father of the Nashville project" - building a railroad between Louisville and Nashville - which would later become the L&N Railroad. He was the first to introduce the idea to the General Council in the city and promoted it throughout the city, the Council and in the newspapers until it was ratified by the citizens. He was appointed to the Board of Directors and remained in that capacity until his untimely death at the age of 44. He was serving as Vice-President of the company at the time of his death.
Riddle also was the President of the Board of Trustees of the Kentucky School of Medicine. He was a prominent member of the Board of Underwriters and was the leading insurer in the city of Louisville.
He married Mary Lawrence in 1835 and together they had four children: Mary (b. 1845), William (b. 1848), Elias (b. 1851) and Charles (b. 1853).
