Mary Kathlyn Shelton Neill
Mary Kathlyn Shelton Neill, 88, passed away on August 18, 2008. She was born on February 24, 1920, in Tyler, Smith County, Texas the only child of Jewel Thedford Shelton and Lee R. Shelton, both deceased. Except for a period during World War II, Mary K. was a lifelong Tyler resident and began her working career in the Registrar's office at Tyler Junior College in the 1950s, continuing her personal education in her spare time and, after receiving her undergraduate degree from East Texas State University, added teaching to her list of responsibilities at TJC, from which she retired in the early 1980s. She was an active member of the Baptist church all her life, first at First Baptist Church and later at Green Acres Baptist Church.
Mary K. was a devoted grandmother; she loved spending time with her grandchildren. She loved her extended family of cousins, nieces, nephews, as well. She always enjoyed traveling, working puzzles and playing games, particularly bridge. This sweet lady touched many lives with sincere consideration, kindness and grace.
Mary K. is survived by her two sons, James L. Neill and wife, Terri, of The Woodlands and Robert D. Neill and wife, Barbara, of Austin and her grandchildren, Jamie Neill and Sarah Neill, of Houston, Andrew Neill of Tyler, Christopher Neill of Austin and Jonathan and Carrie Garcia of San Marcos. She was blessed with one great grandchild, Jackson P. Garcia of San Marcos.
The family will receive friends at Burks Walker Tippit Funeral Home, 215 E. Front Street from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 21, 2008. Funeral services will also be held at Burks Walker Tippit at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 22, 2008, with Dr. Darryle Dunks officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. There will be a reception at Green Acres Baptist Church after the graveside service.
Pallbearers are David Weakley, Rodney Smith, Mike Smuts, Gene Goldsmith, Dr. Glen Goldsmith and Paul Sollock. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of East Texas or charity of your choice.
