Robert G. "Bob" Hoban, 81, of Shelbyville died Monday, May 10, 2010, at Major Hospital.

Born Aug. 26, 1928, in Shelby County, he was the son of Edgar and Lena (Herndon) Hoban. He married Cora E. "Betty" Dake on May 26, 1968, and she survives.

Other survivors include his children, Kevin J. Hoban of Austin, Texas, Gary (wife, Denise) Armstrong of Newport, N.C., Arleta "Leta" (husband, David) Poland of Fairland and Carol Armstrong of Shelbyville; brothers, Cedric Hoban of St. Paul and Marvin Hoban of Lucerne Valley, Calif.; sisters, Mary Barker of Waldron, Nora Mae (husband, Bill) Barnett of Memphis, Tenn., and Doris (husband, Norman) Hinkle of St. Paul; and grandson, Shane Armstrong.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Perry Hoban and Hershel Hoban.

Mr. Hoban was a lifelong resident of this area.

He had been a self-employed barber for 50 years, retiring in 2004, and a lifetime musician.

Mr. Hoban was a U.S. Army veteran. In 1956, he was part of a USO tour with the Bob Hardy Show to Korea.

He graduated from Waldron High School in 1946.

Mr. Hoban was a life member of Masonic Lodge No. 28 F&AM, a member of Rosicrucian Order of Ancient and Mystical Order Rosae Crucis since 1952 and the Mensa Society.

He was a Chet Adkins fan and an avid chess competitor. He was known for several bands he played in over the years, the most notable of which was Bob Hoban and the Midniters.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home, 437 Amos Road.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Nathan Wilson officiating.

Burial will be in Van Pelt Cemetery in Shelby County.

Memorial contributions may be made to National Multiple Sclerosis Society or American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, in care of the funeral home.
