Obituary from LANDMARK, THE (STATESVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA)
Mrs. J. B. Sherrill Claimed by Death
Passes Away at Home of Son Near Eufola - Funeral at Shiloh Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Sarah Katherine Sherrill died this morning at 12:40 o'clock, at the home of her son, Mr. Walter E. Sherrill, about three miles from Eufola. Mrs. Sherrill had been in her usual health until about two weeks ago when she became ill, and her strength had failed rapidly during the past few days.
Though 87 years old Mrs. Sherrill was remarkably active for one of her years. Her health was good and she was able to look after all of her affairs. She frequently came to Statesville to spend several hurs.
Mrs. Sherrill was Miss Sarah Katherine Raymer, a daughter of the late Moses Raymer. She was born and reared in Iredell county, and is the last surviving member of her father's family. She was three times married, her first husband being Mr. Thomas Stevenson, an uncle of Mr. H. L. Stevenson, of Loray, and Mr. W. A. Steverson, of Statesville. Mr. Stevenson, a soldier in the Confederate army, was killed during the war. Mrs. Stevenson later married Mr. Mitchell, living in the West for a few years, until her husband's death when she returned to her home in Iredell. She then married Joseph B. Sherrill. They lived in Catawba County for several years, but later returned to Iredell to make their home. Mr. Sherrill died about twelve years ago. Mrs. Sherrill was the mother of twelve children, five of whom survive. They are Mr. B. A. Sherrill, of Haughten, Louisiana, Mr. H. J. Sherrill, of Youngstown, Ohio, Mrs. Mamie E. Taylor , of Vienna, Va., Mr. Walter E. Sherrill and Mrs. Fannie Parker, of this county. The sons and daughter, living in other states had been called home by their mother's illness and were with her when she died.
The funeral service was held this afternoon at 4 o'clock from Shiloh Presbyterian church, where Mrs. Sherrill had been a member for forty-five years, and interment was in the church cemetery. The service was conducted by her former pastor, Rev. N. E. Oplinger, of Woodleaf, Rowan county, assisted by Dr. J. M. Clark of Statesville.
