He graduated from Union College in Schenectady, New York in 1824, and became a member of the first Board of Albany Medical School. He became associated with Whig Party in 1840 which was run by Thurlow Weed, publisher of “Albany Evening Journal”. He then served in the New York State Assembly from 1844 to 1845, in the New York State Senate in 1846, and as a New York State Associate Supreme Court Justice from 1847 t0 1859. In 1851 he formed Albany Law School in 1851 with Amos Dean & Amasa Parker. He was elected as a Republican Senator from New York to the United States Senate, serving from 1861 to 1867, becoming close friends with President Abraham Lincoln.
