US Representative from New York. Mayor of Schenectady. Moved to Schenectady with parents at age of three months. Attended public schools, Schenectady and Rochester, and Blair Academy, Blairstown, New Jersey. Graduate, University of Rochester, 1937. Graduate, Haverford College, 1938. Graduate, Harvard University, 1940. Chief staff assistant, US Representative Thomas H. Eliot of Massachusetts, 1940-1942. Commissioned ensign in Navy Reserve, June 26, 1942. Served in Southwest Pacific Theater as intelligence officer on staff of Douglas MacArthur. Discharged as lieutenant, 1946. Twice awarded Bronze Star Medal with combat V. Interrogated Japanese supreme commander in Philippines, General Tomoyuki Yamashita, who was later hanged as a war criminal. Deputy secretary-general, US Far Eastern Commission, 1946-1948. Schenectady City Council, 1949-56. Recalled to active duty as lieutenant commander for Korean conflict. Instructor, Naval Intelligence School, 1951-53. Later promoted to Captain. Member, Schenectady Municipal Housing Authority, 1950-55, Chairman, 1951. Schenectady Mayor, 1956-59. Member board of trustees, University of Rochester. Registered financial services representative, First Albany Corporation, 1957-58. Elected Congress, 1958, served January 1959 to January 1989. Rose through ranks to become third ranking Democrat on Armed Services Committee. Staunch advocate of higher defense spending and modernization of US military. Staunch advocate of admitting women to US service academies. Retired to Potomac, Maryland, where he resided until his death. Albany, New York Veterans Affairs Center is named for him, as is Schenectady Air National Guard base. Wife Joan. Three daughters, Lisa Gonzalez, Debra Stratton Mott, and Kim Petrie. Two sons, Kevin and Brian. Son Brian served in Schenectady County Legislature, 2002-2004. Elected Schenectady Mayor, 2004.  (bio by: Bill McKern)
