Joaquin Capilla

Olympic Athlete. Born Joaquin Capilla Pérez, he was Mexico's foremost diving athlete and top Olympic-medal recipient. In 1948, at the Olympic Games London, he won the bronze medal for platform diving at age 19 and a silver medal for platform at the 1952 Olympic Games Helsinki. At the 1956 Olympic Games Melbourne, Australia, he won a bronze medal for springboard diving and a gold medal for the platform. He also won four gold medals in the springboard and platform at the Pan American Games, in Buenos Aires 1951 and Mexico City in 1956. He later coached and taught his diving techniques in Mexico City, inspiring a new generation of competitors. Cause of death: heart failure. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
