Patent medicine vendor and philanthropist Profesor of medicine Thomas Holloway considered by many to be a snake oil salesman, arguably the most succesful of all times.He produced and marketed two products Holloways brand ointments and Holloways brand Pills.His business grew rapidly and in the 1850s and 1860s his annual profits reached £50,000.He opened Holloway's Bank in London City which was very successful in its own right.He made many shrewd and daring investments one of which,in 1871,was to make a loan to France to help the French resist the Prussian invasion.He consulted with Lord Shaftsbury,the most notable social reformer of that era, as to the possible use for his fortune.The decision to provide facilities for the care of the mentally ill was made and Thomas visited institutions in many countries for ideas.The Holloway Sanatorium was built on twenty acres of grounds at Virginia Waters,with nearly five hundred private rooms.The Sanatorium was presented to the Nation in 1885 after being opened by the Prince and Princess of Wales.In 1840 he married Jane Pearce Driver who worked and supported him in every way.The idea of university education for women was a cause advocated by his wife.In 1874 planning for Royal Holloway College began eventually opened by Queen Victoria in 1886,three years after his death.
He died of Conjestion of the Lungs and all of his remaining estate was left to, his late wifes sister, Mary Driver.
