My maternal great grandmother, whose life was quite hard. She had six children and survived two sons, one was killed in WWII, the other one died of a heart disease that was unknown at that time.

When her husband was killed in the pub they ran together in Herne, Ruhr area, my great-grandmother started wearing black clothes, and from what my mom told me, she never ever wore any other colour for the rest of her life.

When my maternal grandfather lost his life in WWII, my granny was on the verge of breaking down, so my great-grandmother decided to join her youngest daugther and give her support. As a matter of consequence, she was always around and had her share of educating her three grandchildren, although my youngest uncle, the only one still alive, was considerably younger than his siblings and cannot remember much about his grandmother.

One of the memories my mom shared with me was great-granny's stubborn head (which she eventually passed on to her youngest daughter). Her greatest joy was to walk through a room when someone had just wiped the floors and they were still wet. Preferrably with dirty shoes. Mom was always convinced that great-grandmother did that on purpose (just like she was convinced that it was on purpose when I always had to go to the bathroom as a child - when the dishes had to be washed).

My great-grandmother eventually got the Mother's cross, a medal of honor for all mothers who had several children; she passed away in the early 1950s and was buried in Gummersbach.

Thanks from the bottom of my heart, Julia and Keld, for kindly sponsoring my great-grandmother's memorial.
